Calling All students: Break out the bishops, ready the rooks and prepare the pawns. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity is hosting a regional scholastic chess tournament at Cleveland State University Oct. 27.
"My main goal is to get kids excited about chess," says Tony Dunlap, the event's organizer.
The tournament is split into three sections: rated for experienced players, nonrated for beginners and collegiate for students under age 25. The rated and nonrated sections each have five divisions that separate students by grade. The 9-12 grade rated section will compete for a $4,000 scholarship.
"Chess is such a good learning tool," Dunlap says. "All of these problem-solving techniques are attributes that you need to make certain decisions in life."
