Started as a way to raise awareness and money to fight cancer, No-Shave November is a ritual only rivaled in prominence by the beards of the men who practice it. In honor of the annual month-long refrain from shaving (a holiday who’s arrival razor companies surely lament), we’re taking a look at the best Cleveland-centric methods to maintaining those glorious manes (and, when the time is right, remove them).
Beard Oil
You may be able to grow a beard for No-Shave November, but treat it right by grabbing Ohio Beard Co.’s Cuyahoga Cedar ($16), named after Cuyahoga Valley National Park, to protect against “beard-druff” (which is exactly what it sounds like). “Beard oil is essentially used to condition the hair,” says founder Jason Ewing, noting that facial hair isn’t quite like the hair on your head. “It requires a little additional conditioning and moisturizing.” ohiobeardcompany.com
Beard Comb
There’s grooming yourself and your ever-growing whiskers, and then there’s doing it while repping CLE with the Cleveland Skyline Beard Comb ($30) from HandleBeard Comb Co. Sanded, shaped and polished by hand by owner Joe Bencar, the maple comb stands up to even the thickest of beards. “The tines ... are set a little bit wider apart [than those you’ll find at the store], to reduce any kind of pulling or hitting snags and stuff,” Bencar says. handlebeard.com
Straight Razor Shave
Once December rolls around and No-Shave November is over, ditch the beard with the same TLC you maintained it with a straight razor shave ($12-$30) at West Park Barber Shop. Barber Patrick Loyal Burke says the crew at the shop’s three Cleveland area locations take pride in making everything an experience with consultations aimed at getting a full understanding of what each customer wants. “[If] it’s shaving it all the way off, then we can offer a hot towel steamed shave,” he says. “If they just wanted it shaped, we have a variety of different ways to shape beards — rounding it or squaring it off, fading in or keeping it more dramatic hard lines.” westparkbarbershop.com
