A trip to the spa is meant to be relaxing. But there’s usually some level of anxiety about what to wear or how much to tip. Here are some basics you should know about spa etiquette, so you can sail through your appointment stress-free.
Ignore the clock.
Yes, you need to show up early for your appointment. But once you walk through the door, you’re on spa time. So don’t stress if your appointment is at noon, and it doesn’t start until 12:03. “Give yourself extra time, so you don’t feel rushed,” says Nicole Ponte, Spa West’s vice president of operations. “Don’t look at the clocks.” In fact, Spa West has removed all of the clocks from eyesight to enhance a stress-free environment.
Be comfortable.
How much you want to strip down depends on the service. Most spas provide robes and will give you guidance on how to dress or undress. “Our guests can go as they wish, so they can leave on their undergarments if that’s more comfortable for them,” says Ponte. “It’s based on their comfort level during a spa treatment.”
Enjoy the silence.
Don’t worry about trying to ask what your technician did Saturday night. They want you to feel relaxed and enjoy your time. When you fall asleep during a massage, “that’s what makes therapists happy,” says Ponte. Skip the chatter and bask in not having to cater to anyone but yourself.
Show your appreciation. Generally, 15 to 20 percent tip is appreciated but not required. To avoid fumbling around for funds at the last minute, come prepared with cash or calculate how much your services will be ahead of time so you can figure out how much to tip before walking in the door. “Gratuity is a very awkward topic,” Ponte says. “We are cash-only, so you can hand it directly to your service provider and show your gratitude.”
