Disregard everything you know about The Craft and relax — it’s only magic. When Miranda Scott opened Coven in July, she wanted the little Salem-inspired boutique on Bonnieview Avenue to be an empowering place for modern feminist witches. “Coven is a beacon,” says Scott, “a place where you can come and really connect with yourself and figure out who you really want to be.” Sure, there are spell kits, tarot cards, assorted crystals — rose quartz for romance, pyrite for prosperity — and candles of all colors in the white-walled shop. But there’s also an abundance of essential oils, lotions, body sprays and herbs curated and crafted by women and local witches. The 31-year-old Scott even
offers free monthly full moon and new moon rituals that are equal parts enchanting and holistic. “People can come here completely uninhibited and tell us what they want and what they need,” she says. “You can make magic out of anything.” 1384 Bonnieview Ave., Lakewood, 216-767-5800, covencle.com
3 Things That Put A Hex On Us From Coven from Public Square
Mojo Bags, $20
These carefully crafted grab bags are charming. Fill it up from a selection of more than 20 herbs and more than a dozen crystals and anoint them with essential oils to help with whatever ails you. Keep these close as a way to mend a broken heart or offer a boost in confidence. “They’re talismans,” says owner Miranda Scott. “Inside of them are things that represent and bring really positive energy.”
Candle Carving, $20
Choose from an array of candle colors that coincide with the spells you need: blue for inner peace, purple for passion. Carve Nordic runes into the candle wax for wisdom, money or other desires. Place the candle in a jar with crystals and oils, and burn it for seven days and nights. “Everything is energy,” says Scott. “When you create a little spell candle, there’s more of your energy and intention put into it.”
Bad Bitches Tarot, $42
Designed by Ethony, a practicing witch of 18 years, this 78-card tarot deck combines all the sass and satisfaction of female empowerment with colorful and kitschy renditions of female witches. “This deck shows that anyone can be a witch,” says Scott. “Being a witch is about being empowered and feeling really aligned with who you are and not having to justify that to anyone.”
