Knots Landing

After being laid off from an Akron advertising agency in 2010, Amy Cornelius wanted to explore her creative side. So she used the time to start Glam and Grace, a style blog and accessory line. "Growing up, I made friendship bracelets, chokers and hemp necklaces," says the 32-year-old. "I figured that accessories were a good place to start." Cornelius now juggles being a Web designer at a local company and running her bohemian grunge line of bracelets, necklaces, lipsticks and scarves. "I love following current fashion trends and putting my own spin on them," she says. Disco call: Cornelius works out of her Slavic Village home where the pieces for her pendant necklaces — nylon cord, leather strips and metal chains — are spread out on her living room floor. She started making these handmade macrame pieces ($35), which take about 45 minutes each, in the past few months after a fashionable observation. "The '70s style is currently trending right now, and these pendant necklaces are spot-on with that," she says. Lip Service: With a personal desire for healthier makeup, Cornelius released all-natural lipsticks ($5) in early October that come in eight colors such as deep plum and peachy nude. After experimenting on her kitchen stovetop with three different recipes, she found the right combination of beeswax, mango butter, shea butter and coconut oil. "Because of my art background, I love color and mixing the colors into a variety of shade options," she says. Be Bold: While growing up in Apple Creek, Ohio, Cornelius was never afraid to take fashion or beauty risks. "In high school, I would wear those huge wide-leg jeans that were popular in the late '90s," she says. "I was all about those." Self Made: To incorporate design in her everyday life, Cornelius started a blog in 2011, not long after she began making her scarves. In addition to an online store, the blog frequently showcases fashion trends and delicious recipes such as one for salmon en papillotte. "I love exploring and creating anything, including food," she says. "I even taught myself cake decorating."
