While founder Sandra Bontempo may rule the roost at FreeRange SkinCare, she likes to let her pet chickens have the spotlight. After all, their eggs are the main ingredient in her line of handmade, all-natural products, which proved popular for helping skin problems such as eczema and rosacea. Bontempo talks to us about starting her line and more.
Q: Why did you create your products?
A: My son was 4 months old. He had asthma, eczema and psoriasis, and a doctor prescribed a topical and a liquid steroid. I was raised by my grandparents on a farm. My great-grandmother was part of the war effort during World War II and supplied the military with soaps and lotions. We made what we used and raised what we ate. I started doing research on natural alternatives and found there were studies showing how egg could help alleviate symptoms of eczema. So I started tinkering, and it worked right away.
Q: How did solving your son’s eczema turn into starting a skin care company?
A: It took me awhile to find a natural preservative that would protect the integrity of the egg. Before that I had to make the products in tiny batches, and we’d have to use it right away. So I’d give it to friends. All of a sudden I had more and more people coming to me for stuff. It got to a point where I was custom-making so much it got a little crazy. But then I found this natural preservative — it’s made in Europe — and I piloted it and tested it and it worked!
Q: What’s your favorite product?
A: A serum called EGG-cellerator ($30). It’s designed to be put on before your moisturizer. It penetrates the deeper layers of the derma, clarifies and pulls out contaminants. It’ll help to clear your skin, but it also opens pores so you’re able to absorb nutrients from your moisturizer.
