Shop Local: Antiquation's Reclaimed Wood Pieces Complete Your Home
Come to the Medina shop for unique, handcrafted items such as bookends and knickknacks.
“The inspiration is to use something that already has some character to it,” Schultz says. “The reclaimed wood comes with its own sort of character. It’s been beat up over time, it’s got nails and holes and other imperfections that add to the beauty of it.” The entrance alone sets the vibe: A staircase from the front leads down into Antiquation’s main area, which is below street level and features the exposed beams and brickwork of the 1890s building it’s set in.“It’s really cool architectural features that we left exposed,” says Schultz. “It sets the tone right as you come in because it’s not your typical storefront.”
Among Schultz’s creations, you’ll also find candles, soaps and more from local makers, and you’ll often see him behind the counter doing a custom wood-burning engraving job on one of his pieces. “When you walk in, you tend to get an essence of that smell,” he says. “It sticks in the air. Almost every customer walks into the store and says that I should bottle it up, make a candle and sell the scent.”
An Item We Love: The reclaimed wood “Ohio” sign ($10-$169) is made by cutting the Buckeye State out of several types of wood such as oak that have been glued together to create a layered color pattern.
