Don’t get tangled into wearing a boring department store necktie. Let your look bloom with a handcrafted accessory from The Whatknot Bow Tie Co.’s downtown shop. Owner Mark A. Mathews never felt like he could find statement pieces for his outfits. Now he sells his original line — think polka dots, camo and more — and seasonal lines. “The accessories should do all the talking,” says Mathews. “Even in a suit — that’s where your pop is. That’s your wow factor.” Here are our top picks from his spring line.
2Lip
Florals are a must-have for spring. The 2Lip bow tie ($50) gives you a pop of color with lime green and a classic flower print. Pair it with a navy blue suit, or even a bright yellow shirt. “This floral pattern is just so out of the ordinary that when I saw it again I couldn’t pass it up,” says Mathews.
Blue Note
If you want to be a little more daring, but still play it safe, the Blue Note ($50) is for you. Mathews recommends pairing the cobalt blue and white floral tie with a gray suit and a white or light blue shirt. He also recommends this one for spring weddings. “You could wear it with jeans and a sweater,” he says. “Or shorts and a button-down for summer.”
Darius
Get patriotic with this blue paisley bow tie ($50) with hints of red and white that would be perfect with a white shirt on Memorial Day or with a gray suit for a more formal occasion. “It’s classy and it’s clean,” says Mathews. “[The paisley pattern] would also look good with stripes. I love mixing patterns.”
