New Histories, New Futures at the Transformer Station
Confronting the past in one hand while holding hope in the other, New Histories, New Futures is the vision of three artists, organized by the Cleveland Museum of Art. Antwoine Washington of Cleveland’s bold colors and geometric shapes recall Harlem Renaissance-era work, while his subjects attack the myth of the absent Black father. Diving into the life of Lee Howard Dobbins, a four-year-old slave whose travel north ended with sickness in Oberlin in 1853, artist Johnny Coleman highlights the young life along the Underground Railroad. Lastly, Kambui Olujimi’s paintings depict weightless Black bodies, symbolizing a future in which oppression no longer tethers. Free, June 26-Sept. 12, Wed.-Sun. 11 a.m.-5 p.m., 1460 W. 29th St., Cleveland, 216-938-5429, transformerstation.org
