You won’t find green beer and dancing leprechauns at the 37th annual Cleveland Irish Cultural Festival July 19-21 at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds. Instead of St. Patrick’s Day tropes, the festival focuses on Irish culture with authentic music, eats and more. “Being authentic is important,” says Caitie Beardmore, who is part of the family behind the event. “We wanted to really bring the rich history of Ireland and its traditional music and food to the people of Cleveland.” Fri. 5-11 p.m., Sat. 1-11 p.m., Sun. 11:30 a.m.-10 p.m. 19201 E. Bagley Road, Berea, clevelandirish.org
Roll Up
While traditional bangers and fries and shepherd’s pie are on the menu at various food vendors, two spots — Sully’s Irish Pub and Hooley House Sports Pub — are doing Irish-inspired egg rolls featuring corned beef. “Traditional Irish food can be a little boring and bland,” admits Beardmore. “So we decided to do a fusion of favorites so there is something for everyone.”
Dancing Shoes
Both local and international bands will be on hand all festival playing everything from traditional Irish music to crossover hits and more. This year We Banjo 3 will perform for the first time at the Grandstand on Saturday and Sunday. The band mixes old world tradition with authentic Americana by mingling the banjo, fiddle, guitar and mandolin in a toe-tapping fusion of styles they dub “Celtgrass.”
Another World
Over the years, Beardmore and her family have kept the festival fresh by adding new things. “We want to express the appreciation of how much Cleveland does for us,” she says. “Without them, our family would not of been able to keep the festival going for the past 37 years.” New this year, a small replica of an Irish Town Square will immerse visitors in sights and sounds that will make them feel like they’ve stepped onto the Emerald Isle.
