Nestled on the shore of Lake Erie, the campground ($29-$41 per night) at Geneva State Park is situated on flat plains surrounded by wetlands that transition into a 600-foot swimming beach that meets the waves at the shoreline. It’s fertile ground that hosts plenty of wildlife. “We have red-headed woodpeckers that nest right in the campgrounds,” says park manager Gary Gerrone. “To see them on a Saturday morning when you’re starting your campfire, you’re not wondering why you came camping. You’re wondering, Why don’t I get out in nature a little bit more?”
But it’s really the lake that’s the big draw to the park. Fishing (particularly for walleye, which is abundant in the area) and boating bring large crowds to the park, where they can dock their own watercraft at the park’s boat ramps or book a charter onto the lake. When campers and fishermen tire of lake life, they head to Geneva-on-the-Lake’s nearby “strip,” a retro throwback with arcades, diners and a Ferris wheel.
The surrounding area also has several covered bridges and abundant wineries. A paved, two-mile path and several hiking trails also offer campers a respite from the water, if you somehow tire of beautiful sunsets over the lake.
