Be thoughtful about color
Although transitional style relies heavily on neutrals, lamp bases, artwork and other details can be used to add brighter accents. “It’s a little too matchy-matchy if everything is one color,” Alexander says.
Embrace texture
When choosing rugs, pillows, curtains and furniture coverings, varied textures are the key to depth. “The important thing, when it comes to fabric, is a variety of textures, so you don’t have everything smooth or everything bumpy,” Alexander says.
Stick to simple framing
Stay away from ornate borders or multiple mats. “Frame your art very simply,” Alexander advises.
Limit your trinkets
The rule of thumb for items on end tables is either one or three items. When it comes to the style, “lean more toward contemporary than traditional,” she says.
Rethink your molding
If you have a traditional, older home, Alexander suggests keeping the crown molding but removing the chair rail. “It’s all about having a clean look — a warmed-up version of traditional,” she says.
