Size Matters
If updating your kitchen or bathroom, the drawers and doors will likely already have holes suited for a particular size of hardware. Use them to help limit your search. "If you have a specific hole you have to fill, then that's great," says Dostal. "By narrowing it down, you've taken out so many different available ones that you don't even have to look at anymore."
Stay Proportional
Think about how the drawer or door will be used before selecting a pull. "A large pull on a small drawer is unnecessary, says Dostal. "It's all about a relationship of where the knob or pull is going and the function of that drawer or door. It has to be able to carry the load of what's inside."
Be Consistent
Plan on budgeting around $500 for good, quality hardware. But whether you're using brushed nickel or brushed stainless steel, stick with the same finish throughout the household for a nice, cleanly designed area. "If you have a bronze faucet, it's always safe to go with the same finish or even a darker finish," Dostal says.
