As the first day of school rapidly approaches, Garet Libbey, assistant head of school at Hawken School, shares three book series your third-grader can read to ease the transition from pool days to school days.
Geronimo Stilton. The series follows Geronimo Stilton, a mouse best-selling author, journalist and newspaper editor, on his adventures in New Mouse City on Mouse Island. “Kids really like it because it’s a graphic novel and a chapter book, so it has a depth of plot and story structure that’s appropriate for their skill level and age, to keep them interested,” explains Libbey.
Ivy and Bean. Similar to the popular Ramona novel series, Ivy and Bean features two spunky best friends who find themselves in predicaments they must solve. “They are friends that are very different and must figure out how to work through different things and appreciate different quirks and skills,” says Libbey.
Magic Tree House. Let your kids help siblings Jack and Annie solve missions as they time travel in their magic tree house. “It’s the kid version of historical fiction,” says Libbey. “It’s a brother-sister team, so it’s good for both boys and girls to read.”
