Haley and Taylor Thierry are the definition of a double threat. While the twins are used to he hustle and bustle of basketball practices after classes, they had no trouble finding ways to keep active and disciplined once school transitioned to distance learning. Which is no surprise, since they grew up with two athletes as parents: Their mom, Elin, played college volleyball, and their dad, John, was a linebacker for the Cleveland Browns. The 17-year-old duo turn to advice from their dad, who died of a heart attack in 2017, as they hope to lead Laurel’s basketball team into contention for a state title this season.
Home Field: While Taylor (bottom left) and Haley got plenty of athletic advice from their dad — such as how to get by defenders on the court — they also carry on his work ethic and philosophy on life. A quote he picked up from a teacher now inspires them: “Sacrifice your life now, so you don’t have to later.” “[It means] take advantage of every moment you have and do not have any regrets,” says Taylor.
Two Sides: The reason why the sisters work well together is that they balance each other out. Each approaches situations in their own way. “Haley is more outgoing, and I’m more like an introvert,” says Taylor. “I listen to people and see how they are, and once I feel comfortable, then I like to associate myself and try to talk more.”
Game Set: Growing up around sports, Taylor and Haley both love the competitive drive basketball gives them. “My family is competitive and will turn anything into a game.” Taylor says.
Future Plans: Taylor is headed to Ohio State University after graduation to play basketball and study engineering, while Haley is still looking into schools. Whether they end up at the same college, the twins are focused on whatever will help them reach their goals. “That’s what we’re looking for the most rather than just focusing on being together,” says Haley.
