Closings
Umami
Umami Asian Kitchen has closed its doors due to COVID-19, claiming its small dining room is not conducive for social distancing. It also cited a drop in takeout orders and difficulty ordering necessary ingredients as reasons for the closing. Umami served Asian-inspired dishes, such as sashimi, miso soup and curries, in Chagrin Falls for 12 years. The restaurant hopes to reopen sometime in the future.
Ushabu
This sushi, shabu-shabu and Japanese tasting-course concept restaurant in Tremont plans to close its doors on July 25 due to its limited seating space. The restaurant, which opened in 2016 and was known for its hot pot dishes, history-inspired tasting menus and ishiyaki, which allows guests to cook their meat on a konro grill and hot stone, was one of our best restaurants in 2019.
New Spots to Watch For
Bar Oni
Slated to replace Ushabu, owner Matthew Spinner announced the switch from a sit-down restaurant to a Japanese-style sports pub. The menu will include grilled chicken skewers, tempura veggie skewers, sake on tap and a range of beers in a Tavern atmosphere. No opening date has been set.
Chimi
Since catering services have taken a hit during the pandemic, Fire Catering owner Doug Katz has decided to put his empty kitchen to good use. He opened Chimi on June 12 as a delivery and curbside pickup only service, and offers a variety of South American dishes, including stews, braises and cold salads.
