Sure, our local restaurant scene is impressive. But every once in awhile foodies (including us) flip out over national chains that make their way to Cleveland. Remember how excited we were over Sonic? Or Piada? Here’s why we’re jazzed about three upcoming openings — and what non-chain alternatives you’ll find us dining at once that newness wears off.
Panda Express
The excitement: When the first Panda Express inside Cleveland city limits opens this month, the stand-alone Steelyard Commons location will boast a drive-thru, making the trek through a mall food court to score orange chicken unnecessary. Non-chain alternative: Rocky River’s King Wah doesn’t skimp on the options (or portion size) — making it our fave spot to nab sesame chicken and pepper steak.
Shake Shack
The excitement: Every day can be Fryday once the hamburger empire rolls into the Pinecrest development this month. We plan to indulge in a side of crinkle-cut fries covered in cheese sauce as we nibble on the famous ShackBurger and secret ShackSauce. Non-chain alternative: Let’s be honest — it doesn’t get any better than a Swensons Drive-In cheeseburger, Potato Teezers and a milkshake.
Tim Hortons
The excitement: Our mornings are about to perk up when the first Northeast Ohio Tim Hortons opens later this year. Forget the Canadian import’s coffee and breakfast sandwiches, we’re all about the Timbits — doughnut holes in flavors such as lemon and apple fritter. Non-chain alternative: Passenger Cafe makes us rethink toast with inventive jam and jelly options from local artisan the Home Pantry.
