Too often when a successful food truck makes the move to a brick-and-mortar restaurant, the laid-back vibe we loved gets left by the roadside. That’s definitely not the case at Hatfield’s Goode Grub, which opened in a Kamm’s Corners storefront in December. The combination cafe and eatery embraces its roots in almost every way: Order at the coffee counter and pick up from the open kitchen in the back when the bell rings; feast on slow-cooked barbecue pork and chicken, burgers and other Southern fare and expect warm hospitality from owners Ken and Jessica Hatfield. A direct descendant of the feuding Hatfield clan, Ken has built the breakfast, lunch and dinner menus off his Deep South upbringing, grandmother Dot’s recipes and 27 years as a chef. You can taste the authenticity in his Brunswick stew ($5) with its layers of flavor that range from a twinge of apple cider vinegar to sweet molasses and includes shredded pork and chicken, tomatoes, garlic and fresh corn, okra, potatoes and other vegetables. But we’re partial to the Hillbilly Philly ($12), which pairs tender barbecued beef with gooey cheese and sauteed onions, peppers and mushrooms wrapped inside a grilled tortilla. Created for the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, it’s a favorite among the golf crowd — and you won’t get any quarrels from us. 16700 Lorain Ave., Cleveland, 216-799-1477, hatfieldsgoodegrub.com
