Local Tavern // The Local Tavern in Willoughby Hills feels familiar — even if you've never stepped foot inside. With its paneled walls, track lighting and low ceiling, you know this place. You like this place. It's warm, welcoming just as a tavern should be. There's comfort in the menu, too. Burgers, wings and other pub favorites. But then you notice the creatively named famous little devils ($8.99) — bacon-wrapped green peppers stuffed with pimento cheese and spicy sausage. It's inventive, more than what you expected. Because of that, we suggest starting with the shroom fries ($8.99). The crispy, tangy strips of potato arrive at the table piled high on a cookie sheet, draped in roasted portobello mushrooms, fresh Parmesan and mozzarella cheeses and a mushroom cream sauce. If you're like us and want to celebrate St. Patrick's Day year-round, you'll find the shepherd's pie ($11.99) hard to pass up. This simple twist on the classic loses the lamb, peas and carrots in favor of tender slow-braised shredded beef short rib. Combined with spinach, mushrooms, peppers and caramelized onions, it's finished with a layer of silky mashed potatoes, a Parmesan crust and a balsamic reduction drizzle. Portions are hearty, so it's a good idea to bring a friend, they'll feel right at home.
