Before heading to the University of Notre Dame, Liam Eichenberg played at St. Ignatius High School under legendary coach Chuck Kyle. Here are three things to know about the 6-foot-6, 302-pound Eichenberg, a likely first or second round pick in April’s NFL Draft.
He’s been willing to put in the work.
Eichenberg received an offer from Ohio State after his sophomore year, but didn’t let it affect him. Eichenberg understood the commitment — in the weight room, in practice, in games — that was necessary to keep that offer and earn more. “Recruitment gets talked about like this romantic thing, but it’s a job,” says Kyle. “It’s intense.”
He’s consistent week after week.
“There’s this quality of consistency with him,” Kyle says. “If it’s 3 and 1, where the hell do you think we were going to run? The other teams know it too. And we get it anyway.” When asked if there was one game that stood out, Kyle couldn’t pick just one. “It was that consistent effort that made him special,” Kyle says.
He thought beyond himself.
One summer, after Eichenberg spent a year at Notre Dame, he still came back to help coach at a kid’s offensive line camp. “He understands the impact that can have and what it means for the kids to have a Division I player there coaching them,” Kyle says.
