Women of reproductive age about to undergo chemotherapy often face a dilemma. The cancer treatment kills their eggs, but many don’t have a partner with which to make embryos. Others don’t want to make embryos they may never need. So Cleveland Clinic’s in vitro fertilization team invented a way to freeze eggs — difficult due to their high water content. Dr. Tommaso Falcone says the technique has spurred interest from in vitro fertilization clinics worldwide and can be administered with confidence: “We’ve had a couple of live births, and we’re quite proud of the fact that we can offer this type of clinical option.”
