In a pot at least 8 inches wide, add potting soil and assemble cut evergreen branches such as green spruce, cedar or juniper, upright into the soil at 45- to 70-degree angles. “It’s just a natural transition to want to put some evergreen color into your garden,” says Noelle Akin, Petitti’s Garden Centers’ director of communications and education. “It’s the first thing people see when they visit.”
Place rustic birch branches, glossy red winterberry branches or spruce tips in the center or back left side of the arrangement. “Use what’s really going to be eye-catching, that’s going to stand up and be the focal point in that pot,” says Akin.
Soften the arrangement with accents such as white pine or lacey cedar. Then add some color by using indigo-blue juniper berry or golden cypress. “That’s where the other colors of the evergreens come in,” says Akin. “You can fill in wherever you see an empty spot.”
Add holiday ornaments, miniature lights or red ribbon. “It could be sparkly branches or glitter pinecones or it could be anything that you like,” says Akin. “It’s really up to the person’s individual taste for the holidays.”
