As the name cheekily implies Cheese and Chong’s offers a trippy dining experience.
Among the 1970s psychedelic wallpaper and decor, it’s easy to get high on the menu of gourmet mac ‘n’ cheese. Opened in February and connected to the Matinee, an easygoing music club and bar in Akron’s Highland Square, this casual dining spot doesn’t take itself too seriously.
Order at the counter, grab a booth and dig into your mac ‘n’ cheese, served in 7-inch round foil to-go containers whether you’re eating in or splitting. Either way the heaping order of cleverly crafted macs leave you in a euphoric state.
The Bigg-Mac Mac ($7.50) tastes exactly like the famous McDonald’s sandwich with its rich combination of colby and Swiss cheeses and ground beef. But it’s the caramelized and dehydrated onions, special sauce and sesame seeds that have you coming back for seconds.
For another playful spin on a classic, opt for the Philly Cheese Steak Mac ($8.50). It’s like a deconstructed version of the iconic sandwich with pieces of tender Philly steak tossed with diced green peppers and onions. And if the mix of provolone and Asiago cheeses weren’t enough, a cheddar cheese swirl on top adds even more fun.
But whatever you eat at this funky spot, just know you’ll have one groovy time. 812 W. Market St., Akron, 234-312-9073, cheeseandchongs.com
