Hocking Hills State Park
Packed with gorges carved from the region’s signature blackhand sandstone, waterfalls and dense forest, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were somewhere deep in Appalachia. There are more than 40 miles of trails and even more in the surrounding Hocking Hills State Forest. State Route 664, Logan, 866-644-6727, reserveohio.com
Lake Erie Bluffs
Have Lake Erie all to yourself at one of the two campsites set about a half-mile apart and perched atop 35- to 45-foot cliffs. The work to get here is worth it thanks to the access you’ll get to the untouched beaches below, which are decorated with weathered driftwood and shells. 3301 Lane Road, Perry Township, 440-358-7275, lakemetroparks.com
Mohican State Park
Tucked into a deep gorge carved by the Clear Fork River, the park’s campground offers sites right alongside the river, providing not only views of the rugged terrain, but also easy access for tubing down the water. Bring your own tube or hit up a livery in nearby Loudonville for tube or canoe rentals. Loudonville, 866-644-6727, reserveohio.com
South Bass Island State Park
Offering a respite from the Put-In-Bay crowds, the small park more than makes up for its lack of size with the views from its campsites. Plenty of campers bring their boats to launch from the park’s marina and the spot is a destination for walleye, bass and perch fishing. 1523 Catawba Ave., Put-In-Bay, 866-644-6727, reserveohio.com
