You’ve popped the bubbly, told your family and friends and probably even made it Facebook official. Now, it’s time to get those save the dates out with a picture perfect engagement session. Angela Bartunek of Aster + Olive Photography offers her take on how to strike the perfect pose, pick a location and more.
Get the look.
When choosing apparel for an engagement session, Bartunek says to wear minimal accessories, avoid matching too much with your significant other and avoid wearing white. “If it’s a sunny day and you’re wearing a white shirt, it can be really overpowering,” she says. You should also consider the seasonality of the shoot — pick lighter, more vibrant colors in the summer and darker, dramatic colors come fall.
Be affectionate.
Most of us aren’t natural-born models so getting in front of that camera can be a little awkward at first. Your photographer will be there to offer guidance and direction, but Bartunek recommends that you and your spouse write each other a love letter for the shoot. “I want them to read it to each other to get them remembering what it’s all about,” she says.
Focus on you.
Couples shouldn’t stress too much about picking a location, Bartunek says, because the setting shouldn’t be the focal point of the image. “What’s more important is the two of them and how they connect,” she says. “You can be in front of a dumpster and have incredible photos.”
