There's no lack of fast-casual restaurants opening in Northeast Ohio from Burger Fresh in Brecksville to Choolaah Indian BBQ in Orange. Local West, the latest entry into the world of creative quick eats, opened in February with a menu full of craft sandwiches, burgers, pita pizzas, salads and sides. The former Niko's Greek Grille in the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood has been transformed into a cozy, modern space with an open kitchen and large chalkboard menu for ordering. With Local West's focus on using as many local ingredients as possible — the owners estimate they'll use about 75 percent local produce at the height of the season — you can't go wrong with any of the dishes. The Boba Feta Chicken sandwich ($10) pairs chicken with tomatoes, spinach, feta and a tangy house dressing for a light lunch offering. If you want something heartier, give the UB40 poutine ($12) a spin. A twist on the Canadian staple, the fresh-cut fries are layered with braised Ohio beef, red wine tomato gravy, sweet onions and a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese. The sides are also stellar with options such as a zesty jalapeno slaw ($3), bright, summery oven-roasted lemon potatoes ($3) and a heart-healthy four-bean salad ($3). While the concept here may be fast-casual, there's no rush to leave. Take advantage of the small but well-curated list of craft beer and wine (try Fat Head's Bumble Berry) and stay awhile.
