Energy efficiency has gotten a whole lot more affordable in the last few years. While LED light bulbs were as much as $40 a bulb as recently as 2010, today you can snag a three-pack of GE light-emitting diode bulbs for $11. They provide the same amount of light as a 60-watt bulb but only use 10-watts of electricity and can be used in existing fixtures. “A lot of circuits in houses are designed for [old] energy-eating bulbs,” says James Justice, owner of Architectural Justice. “You can put so many more lights on those circuits now.” LED bulbs also last longer than regular compact fluorescent lights and offer more color temperature potential — from a warm ambient glow to crisp bright white and even blue, green or red.
