Whether you’re looking for a fun activity for the family, a night out on the town or some lighthearted competition, bowling is always the answer. With National Bowling Day around the corner Aug. 14, we highlighted some of Cleveland’s best bowling alleys to help you celebrate the day in style.
Wickliffe Lanes
This clean, family-owned establishment has been a staple in the community since 1975. Co-manager and co-owner Jeff Gierman knows people don’t just visit for the 40 synthetic lanes, bumpers, two full-service bars, 12 billiard tables and massive high-definition televisions — they come to have a good time. “Our bowling alley is for everybody, from kids to senior citizens and everybody in between,” says Jeff, who owns the alley with his brother Randy. Every Friday at 9:30 p.m. through the summer, Wickliffe Lanes hosts “Bowling for Dollars,” where patrons 18 years and older can compete to win a jackpot prize. If you’re looking for the perfect hometown bowling alley that also offers a chance to win some money, Wickliffe Lanes is the place for you. 30315 Euclid Ave., Wickliffe, 440-585-3505 wickliffelanes.com
Mahall’s 20 Lanes
With a rich history that began in 1924, Mahall’s has transformed into a modern venue dedicated to live music and fun. “Being the oldest bowling alley in the state, we offer so much more beyond bowling and food,” says Mahall’s 20 Lanes owner Cory Hajde of the 20,000-square-foot bowling, bar and event venue. Those offerings are on display in the menu, which features vegan and vegetarian options along with robust cocktail list. This historical, creative institution is the perfect place to sip and bowl with friends. 13200 Madison Ave., Lakewood, 216-521-3280, mahalls20lanes.com
Rebman’s Recreation
Owner Patti Rebman Bellman knows a bowling alley is more than just a set of lanes. For 75 years, Rebman’s has been a family affair. “I work with my two brothers and sister every day,” says Rebman Bellman. With an on-site pro shop and embroidery store that monograms everything from bowling shirts to school uniforms, not to mention karaoke on Thursdays and private rooms available for fundraisers and birthday parties, this West Side bowling alley wants its family tradition to become your family tradition. 5300 Oberlin Ave., Lorain, 440-282-6761, rebmanrec.com
Whirlyball
Whirlyball may be better known for enticing activities such as Laser-Sport, virtual reality and, most notably, whirlyball — a fast-paced combination of jai alai, basketball and hockey played in bumper cars. But this Bedford Heights entertainment center has some stellar bowling, too, thanks in part to its six bowling lanes that feature lane-side service along with cosmic bowling. But for this reservation-only indoor game facility to host bonding activities for the office, family, and friends with a menu that includes sandwich, meat, and veggie trays to feed even the biggest of crowds, alongside a 100-foot bar. “Families get together and they have fun here, companies get together and they have fun here, too,” says Rick Morad, general manager of Whirlyball. 5055 Richmond Road, Bedford Heights, 216-591-0707, wbcleveland.com
