Cleveland Makers Are Creating Stylish, Charitable Masks
If we're going to wear masks, might as well make them fashionable, say Cool Critters, Ilthy and Yellowcake Shop. Plus, how the makers are donating masks to those in need.
Cool Critters
Unisex Adult Cotton Face Mask, $16
Jess Sheeran is the creator behind Cool Critters, a collection of one-of-a-kind whimsical stuffed animals — with the cancellation of future craft shows, she’s set out to carry over similar whimsical patterns to create colorful face masks with floral and animal prints. “I'm readjusting with the current situation and doing the best I can with what resources and knowledge that I have,” says Sheeran. Each mask is made with 100% cotton and includes a built-in pocket for N95 filters with an adjustable strap for a one-size fit. “If you want a specific color, you can write a note,” says Sheeran. “Message me if you're a health care worker. I am going to give those masks priority.” etsy.me/3e8GBbz
Ilthy
Brand Logo Face Masks, $50 (Four Pack)
Public health but make it fashion: Ilthy designer, founder and artist Glen Infante has teamed up with owner Kumar Arora to take their iconic streetwear style to the next level with a four-pack of face masks, face mask covers and neck masks. Available in small, medium and large, the masks are made from a breathable, quilted jersey and available in classic Ilthy patterns, making them a fashionable way to stay safe. “I think that's what's unique, is that this type of material you'd see on a high-end piece, like a jacket of some sort,” says Arora. Comfort isn’t the only goal here, as the duo are also doing their part to assist the community. “For every purchase, we're going to donate another mask towards different people in need within Cleveland,” says Arora. ilthy.com
Yellowcake Shop
Protective Face Masks, $12-20
When Valerie Mayen, the owner of Yellowcake Shop, began receiving requests for protective face masks, she partnered with Case Western Reserve University’s Sears think[box] and its manager Ian Charnas to get the ball rolling. The former Project Runway contestant has launched a line of Olson masks that include an interior pocket for a filter. To ensure that everyone who needs a mask gets one, the designer is offering a couple of different purchase options. “You can choose to donate one when you buy one for $20,” says Mayen. “For that option, whenever you purchase [a mask] we’ll donate one to an organization that cannot afford to pay with people on the frontline.” yellowcakeshop.com
