While there aren’t as many options for a jazz-infused night on the town as there once were –– Nighttown remains closed and we lost The House of Swing to the pandemic –– Cleveland still boasts a few good options for a great night of cocktails and blaring horns.
• Ohio City’s, the Bop Stop’s listening room was named one of the “Best Jazz Venues in the United States” by All About Jazz. Hosting more than 300 concerts yearly, the venue is run by the Music Settlement, a nonprofit launched in 1912 with the goal of bringing affordable music instruction to Cleveland youth.
• The Velvet Tango Room holds down the border between Tremont and Ohio City with weekly performances from jazz trio John James, Bradford and Skip; not to mention a rotating roster of pianists. With nonstop jazz to accompany your drink of choice, it’s hard to imagine a smoother night.
• Recently reopened in March after two years in pandemic limbo –– and a shiny new remodel –– The Brother’s Lounge remains the West Side’s jazz staple. Boasting a 50-year history that’s brought artists as monumental as B.B. King to Cleveland, the venue offers locals a taste of the blues as well as swing.
