Mahall’s, Lakewood’s popular bowling alley, music venue, cocktail bar and event space will soon feature a new, 800 person-capacity venue called The Roxy.
Taking over what used to be the 10 bowling lanes on the venue’s main level, the venue looks back on Mahall’s nearly 100-year history and revives a former dance hall that lived in the same space in the 1920s and 30s. It uses The Roxy, the hall’s original name, according to a news release.
“Mahall’s celebrates 100 years of business in 2024. We are so excited to offer this space to our exceptional community. As we wrap up work on the Roxy, our focus will shift to improving the conditions of the original 10 bowling lanes downstairs,” says co-owner Cory Hajde in a news release. “A continued effort of preservation, restoration, and longevity is at the forefront of bringing the building into another centennial while honoring its history.”
The Roxy will be used to host the variety of events that already take place at Mahall’s: concerts, dance parties, weddings, markets and more. Hajde says he hopes to have the space up and running in September.
Built with materials from the bowling lanes and pinsetter machines, The Roxy will also offer an ADA-accessible entrance on the side of the building, along with gender neutral bathrooms and an additional bar, according to a news release.
The Roxy follows other significant changes and updates that Hajde and his ownership team have made to the space. Most notably, the team closed down its basement Locker Room stage to open Pins & Needles, a ‘70s cocktail bar, last summer. The bar was damaged from flooding this past winter, and it reopened in March with new furnishings.
When he opened Pins & Needles, Hajde commented on historic preservation of the Mahall's building, while also moving the space into the future.
“Preservation is still a number one goal for us as we continue working on the space. It’s an institution,” he said in an interview with Cleveland Magazine. “We are trying to put programming in place so that people can actually make this a destination for everything.”
