On Thursday, the Cleveland Guardians announced a renovation project that is expected to break ground later this year, before wrapping up in 2025. Some features include the clubhouses and the service level, both of which will see updates for the first time since 1994 when the ballpark first opened — making Progressive Field the 11th oldest MLB stadium.
The announcement comes off the heels of last year’s lease extension — agreed upon and funded by the City of Cleveland, State of Ohio, Cuyahoga County and the Gateway Economic Development Corporation of Greater Cleveland — ensuring the Guardians stay at Progressive Field through 2036, with a potential extension to 2046.
The project’s estimated total sits at $202.5 million, with $67.5 million coming directly from the Guardians. The team is expected to cover any potential budget overages, as well.
The focus of the renovations extends across both player and patron amenities. The clubhouses and service level face a complete reimagining, enhancing the training and recovery processes. Such changes include an improved kitchen space and better strength and conditioning areas.
Homing in on the everyday-Clevelander experience, the upper deck will add new social areas with the addition of a beer garden over the left-field line, group outing space down the right-field line and added concessions alongside new view boxes over home plate.
The Terrace Club will become an open-air hub for the 200- and 300-levels with the promise of an “authentic-to-Cleveland Beer Hall” on the 400-level, according to a news release from the team. Ticketed seating for the 300-level seats will include their own private club space.
In right field, the Guardians will erect a new E. 9th Street Building, allowing for expanded kitchen, commissary and storage space. The rooftop, connected to the upper concourse, will serve as a group space.
The project is nearing the end of the schematic design process, before heading into the development design process for the bulk of this year. Check back for updates through the renovation.
